A BOLD FILMMAKING ACHIEVEMENT
Now recognized as one of Walt Disney's film masterpieces, "Fantasia" received a mixed response when it opened November 13, 1940 in New York at the Broadway Theater. While many viewers recognized that they had witnessed motion picture his- tory, others criticized it severely.
Although hard to imagine today, the initial mixed response to "Fantasia" can be explained by the film's uniqueness. With "Fantasia," Walt extended animation into what some critics called "a new art form." Most viewers at the time were quite simply- unprepared for it!
But like any other bold artistic experiment, "Fantasia" even- tually found its audience. A 1956 re-release was enormously suc- cessful, and since 1969 it has been in continuous release worldwide.
